BHI’s commitment to improving lives and strengthening communities extends beyond our campuses. Since our founding in 1905, we have provided both volunteers and financial support to a wide range of initiatives benefiting not only the people who live and work in BHI communities but also in the areas where we are located. In this spirit of service and honoring our legacy of community support, each year BHI selects four areas of focus. In 2024 BHI has chosen the following four areas:
Veteran’s Initiatives
At BHI we believe that individuals who have served our country should be honored more than once a year. We’re proud to provide support for Veteran’s initiatives both on campus and in the larger community. Each BHI Community has a Veteran’s Memorial and individually recognizes Veterans and their spouses. Additionally, BHI underwrites the airfare for guardians of residents participating in Honor Flights to Washington DC.
Alzheimer’s Disease
Dementia, in one form or another, touches each of us. All of us know someone who is living with memory loss. Dementia affects not just the individual, but also has a profound impact on their family. While great strides have been made in research and treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease, a cure has yet to be found. BHI residents and staff members have joined together supporting two important events raising funds to fight this disease. In June, all communities will host events and fundraising initiatives for The Longest Day. The day recognizes the dedication and commitment of those providing care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s Disease. In the fall, both residents and staff members will join in a Walk to End Alzheimer’s. These walks, held in over 600 areas nationwide, are the world’s largest event to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s. BHI participants may join in a walk, or, for residents who may not feel able to participate in a walk, events are held on our campuses.
Education
BHI communities are not only wonderful places to live, but great places to work. Since the inception of the BHI Foundation in 1986, we have committed resources to employee education. This program provides substantial support for tuition, including undergraduate and graduate degrees, specialized certifications, trade schools and other professional training. Currently, over
60 employees are taking advantage of this potentially life-changing program.
Wellness & Living with Purpose
Good health and the time to enjoy it are among life’s greatest gifts. For many residents of BHI Communities, retirement brings time to pursue interests or hobbies, time to devote to families and opportunities to improve or maintain personal health and wellness. Finding joy and a sense of well-being means something different to each of us. This year, we focus on facilitating opportunities for residents to experience new and interesting ways of promoting wellness, whether physical, spiritual, or emotional.
As another part of this year’s focus, the communities are forging relationships with a variety of charitable organizations where residents may share their knowledge, skills, and experience. The opportunities are as varied as the residents themselves. These efforts are not focused just on independent residents, there are opportunities for individuals of all abilities to have meaningful, purposeful engagement.
